  •   16 November 2017

Following the shortlist announcement for Best Space for Entertaining, we’re proud to announce the six projects that are in the running to be named “Best Space for Retreat” in the Lookbox Design Awards 2017. Find out which will take home the gold at the main awards event, which will be held on 14 December – tickets to the highly anticipated Gala Night will be on sale very soon!

These are the projects our international judging panel has picked as some of the most inspiring spaces that encapsulates the ethos of retreating into a private sanctuary:

WHITE_BRICK_HOUSE__16

1) Project name: White Brick House
Project type: Cluster townhouse
Firm: UPSTAIRS_

About the project: The French homeowner wanted a home for him and his 9-year-old son that is relaxing and nostalgic of his childhood growing up in a beach countryside of southern France. The designers analysed that the most tactile materials, such as brick and timber, should be factored in to fulfil the brief. A white colour palette was selected as a unifying colour, and also for its clarifying effects on the mind.

WYNK-AMapartment_09

2) Project name: AM Apartment
Project type: 1-bedroom condominium unit
Firm: Wynk Collaborative

About the project: A brand new condominium unit with run-of-the-mill finishes is transformed into a space that feels like a sanctuary, and with a palette that is engaging yet soothing to the senses. The design also makes efficient use of space.

3) Project name: Ang Mo Kio Residence
Project type: 3-storey semi-detached house
Firm: Atelier Here

About the project: This house features a prayer space, designed as a sanctuary punctured only by daylight. An eight-metre long cabinet here incorporates bookshelves and storage space, while screening this space from the rest of the house. As for the rest of the house, colours and textures are also kept to a minimum to create stillness and visually bring in exterior’s surrounding greenery.

4) Project name: 15 Retreat
Project type: Intermediate terrace house
Firm: The Carpenter’s Workshop

About the project: As the original house lacked natural lighting and had a low ceiling, the designers reworked the space to optimise airflow and natural light, and implement a sense of space. An earth-tone colour palette provides a sense of rest and calm for the senses.

5) Project name: Retreat
Project type: Condominium unit
Firm: Linear Space Concepts

About the project: The homeowners wanted a relaxing feel in their home, and for it to have a touch of Peranakan style. The use of old Peranakan tiles, wooden elements and colour gives the apartment its unique character.

Loft_3

6) Project name: Sunnyvale Residence
Project type: Dual-key loft condominium unit
Firm: Wee Studio

About the project:  As space is tight, the designers maximised the entertainment space with the use of a sofa bed and loose furniture that can be easily moved around to reconfigure the space. A small pantry, built-in furniture and a selection of decor and fixtures were also integrated to provide comfort, functionality and aesthetics even in a compact apartment.
