LBDA 2018 shortlist The Monocot Studio - Aspen Height

Announcing the Lookbox Design Awards 2018 shortlist for Best Space for Retreat

  •   9 October 2018

We’re proud to announce the six projects that are in the running to be named “Best Space for Retreat” at Lookbox Design Awards 2018.

Find out which project will take home the gold at our Gala Night on Thursday 22 November. Book your tickets here!

These are the projects our international judging panel has picked as some of the most inspiring spaces that encapsulate the ethos of retreating into a private sanctuary:

1) Project name: The Seafront Apartment
Project type: 3-bedroom apartment

The initial brief was for a ‘resort-themed’ home-away-from-home for the client and his family, who are based in Indonesia. Eschewing the typical ‘Balinese’ and ‘rusticated’ resort aesthetics, this apartment displays a contemporary reinterpretation of the local vernacular through a layered choreography of textures, material form and graphic patterns, set within a seamlessly detailed architectural space.

LBDA 2018 shortlist METRE Architects - Hillion Residences

2) Project name: Hillion Residences
Project type: Studio apartment
Firm: METRE Architects

The client desired a home that could cover the requirements of Live, Work and Play. To create a variety of functions in this petite 43sqm apartment, a singular multi-functional space was designed with the most distinct feature being a single sculptural landscape that forms the bed, sofa, work and dining space. Volumes beneath this sculptural form also offer up loads of practical storage.

LBDA 2018 shortlist The Monocot Studio - Aspen Height

3) Project name: Aspen Height
Project type: 3-bedroom apartment
Firm: The Monocot Studio

Whimsical yet functional, the master bedroom and en suite have been converted into a paradise for the client’s physically challenged child. The bed frame is designed like a house to encourage the child to sleep alone while the bathroom is opened up to allow easy access. For a calming effect, a muted blue colour palette is used throughout the handicapped-friendly space.

LBDA 2018 shortlist PROVOLK ARCHITECTS - Onsen Apartment

4) Project name: ONSEN APARTMENT
Project type: 2-bedroom apartment

The brief called for a Zen-like home that evokes a sense of calmness and tranquility, where the clients can recuperate after a tiring day. To achieve the desired retreat-like interior, careful selection of finishes and screen designs were made. The most noticeable is the TV console that boasts a sliding screen which can reveal or hide the TV on demand.

LBDA 2018 shortlist wee studio - Sky Peak

5) Project name: Sky Peak
Project type: 3-bedroom apartment
Firm: wee studio

Minimalist in colour and material palette, this flat is conceived as a place where the client can relax, work and hold large family gatherings. Seating areas are flexible and aplenty, with enough room to move around. Custom carpentry too abound in communal spaces, lending a cohesive look throughout.

LBDA 2018 shortlist Hall Interiors - Symphony of Lines

6) Project name: Symphony of Lines
Project type: 3-bedroom apartment
Firm: Hall Interiors

With the idea of harmonising the mind and soul through the use of natural materials and natural light, ash wood and slate stone make up the material palette. The dark, rich tones of the materials are counterbalanced by keeping the flat as open as possible. To keep the space clutter-free, inconspicuous storage spaces are maximised behind feature walls.
